When you walk through one of our MRT garden centers, it's pretty easy to find a plant you like, put it on a cart, and head toward the register. What you probably don't see is everything that happened before that plant ever made it onto the sales floor. From ordering and receiving to watering, inspecting, pruning, and merchandising, there's quite a bit of work happening behind the scenes to make sure our plants are healthy and our customers have a great selection to choose from.

Plants aren't exactly like boxes of screws. A box of screws doesn't need water, doesn't get sunburned, and doesn't suddenly decide it hates where you put it. Running a garden center means managing thousands of living products that continue growing and reacting to the weather every single day. Thankfully, we have a dedicated group of team members who help make it all happen.

From the Nursery to Our Garden Centers

Nearly all of our plant material comes from licensed nurseries right here in Florida. Our ordering teams work with a variety of growers to source plants that make sense for Southwest Florida, while keeping an eye on seasonal availability, customer requests, and what's selling at each of our three locations. Depending on the season, each store can receive a dozen or more plant and tree deliveries in a single week, ranging from smaller shipments to truckloads of shrubs, palms, trees, and flowering plants.

Every single plant that arrives at MRT is inspected for quality, damage, pests, and nutritional problems. If something doesn't meet our standards, we refuse it or send it back. We'd rather miss out on a particular variety than introduce unhealthy plant material into our garden centers. Once everything passes inspection, our team members get to work unloading, organizing, and finding a home for the new arrivals. Each location has its own space constraints, so we make extensive use of multi-tier rolling racks and some creative merchandising to get a lot accomplished with the space available. It's a little like playing Tetris, except the pieces are alive and occasionally weigh a few hundred pounds.

Watering, Maintenance, and a Little Florida Weather

You'd think watering would be the easy part. Turn on the irrigation, let everything get wet, and everybody is happy. Unfortunately, plants didn't get that memo. A three-gallon shrub sitting in full sun has very different needs than a tropical plant in the shade, and Florida's unpredictable weather certainly doesn't make things easier.

We use a combination of hand watering and overhead irrigation, along with moisture meters that allow our team members to check moisture levels below the surface of the soil. Just because the top of a container looks dry doesn't necessarily mean the entire pot needs water. We also try to accomplish much of our watering around opening and closing to minimize hoses across shopping areas and avoid creating wet sidewalks while customers are walking around.

Of course, watering is only part of the responsibility. Plants continue growing while they're here, which means our team members are constantly pruning, removing spent flowers, pulling weeds, checking for pests, and moving plants around as needed. Between our heat, humidity, heavy rain, and occasional dry spells, there's rarely a shortage of things needing attention.

Making It All Look Good

Merchandising a garden center is another job entirely. We want our stores to be easy to navigate, with plants grouped logically and displays that inspire customers to try something new. If you've visited our locations recently, you've probably noticed some of the improvements we've made to our layouts, including opening up aisles, reorganizing plant areas, and making the shopping experience more comfortable.

None of this happens without our team members. We have some incredibly hardworking, knowledgeable, and genuinely nice people across our three locations who take pride in keeping the garden centers looking their best. The same person unloading a truck in the morning might be watering plants, rearranging an entire display, helping someone select a tree, and loading mulch before lunchtime. There's a tremendous amount of work happening that most customers never see, and I'm grateful for the people we get to work with every day.

And Then You Show Up

After all the ordering, trucking, unloading, inspecting, watering, pruning, and rearranging, the final step is hopefully pretty simple: you find something you love. That might be one little annual for the porch, a new palm for the backyard, or the beginning of the classic garden center scenario where someone came in for one plant and is now asking whether 47 plants will fit in the back of a Honda Accord.

One of my favorite things about this business is that it's never completely finished. The inventory changes, the weather changes, new trucks arrive, and there's always something else that needs attention. I'm proud of the teams we've built together in South Venice, Port Charlotte, and North Venice, and I hope the next time you visit, you'll appreciate just how much care goes into getting those plants ready for your home.

Thanks for shopping locally, supporting our family-owned business, and giving all those plants a good home. We'll see you at MRT!
