Proper Pruning = Happy Roses

Roses are an inspiration to many beautiful things but proper pruning is what gets them there. In most cases roses need annual pruning to keep them healthy, flowering, shaped and on the right track. That's why it's important to look for signs on the stems and shoots.

Indoor Vegetable Garden

You don't need a huge plot of land or the perfect climate to grow vegetables. It can be fun and productive to have an indoor vegetable garden, but indoor gardening is different from outdoor gardening and does take some special care.

Winter temperatures are frequently low enough to cause cold injury to plants. Freezing conditions occur annually in north and central Florida, while below freezing is rare for south Florida. The average frost dates for the Venice/Sarasota/Port Charlotte area are Dec.28 – Feb.11.

Poinsettia Care

Follow these tips: Unwrap your poinsettia carefully and place in indirect light. Six hours of light daily is ideal. Southern windows with full sun exposure are NOT good places, because of temperature fluctuations. Poinsettias are tropical plants and prefer a temperature range of 65°F night and 75-80°F daytime temperatures.

Christmas Cactus

Holiday cactus are members of the Zygo-cactus family, and an epiphyte. These tropical cacti are found in many of the same environments as orchids. Christmas cactus, Schlumbergera bridgesii, is a winter-flowering plant native to Brazil.
